Delta State University and NIOMR Join Forces to Drive Aquaculture and Marine Research Innovation
Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, has partnered strategically with the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Lagos, to advance aquaculture and marine research. This collaboration aims to tackle key challenges in sustainable aquaculture, environmental conservation, and food security by combining DELSU's academic expertise with NIOMR’s marine research capabilities.
The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, outlines initiatives to benefit local communities and the nation. Key activities include collaborative research projects, academic exchanges, student entrepreneurship programs, and community training. Notably, the partnership will focus on the sustainable development of aquatic species using innovative molecular tools and aquafeed development, providing alternative protein sources to improve fish feed quality and reduce costs. By leveraging NIOMR’s marine research infrastructure, the initiative aims to create viable solutions for Nigeria's aquaculture industry, addressing issues such as high feed costs, skill gaps, and the environmental impact of fishing practices.
DELSU and NIOMR are committed to fostering a sustainable aquaculture value chain that will support food security and economic growth in Delta State and beyond through joint workshops, technical training, and cooperative programs.
