Area of Specialization: Entomology
Department of Animal and Environmental Biology
Chioma Cynthia Ojianwuna obtained her B.Sc. in Zoology (First Class Honors) from Delta State University, Abraka, and Delta State, Nigeria in 2004 and she received the Vice Chancellor’s Award as the Best Graduating Student of the University in 2003/2004 Academic Session. She also obtained her M.Sc in Zoology (Entomology Option) with a Distinction from the same University in 2009. She obtained her Ph.D. in Entomology, in 2018 from Ambrose Ali University, Ekpoma Edo State, Nigeria. Dr Ojianwuna is a Senior Lecturer and currently the Ag. Head of Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. Her research interest is focused on insects and their services to humanity. Research on positive impact of insect is centered on the use of butterflies as ecological indicators of forest disturbance, the factors that affect their abundance and distribution, species diversity and taxonomy, insects’ succession pattern in strangled and slaughtered rats (which may provide preliminary data in criminal investigations) and formulation of cheap insect- fortified meals for livestock (fish and poultry). Based on these, she and her research team are preparing a gene bank for important species of butterflies and plants in Nigeria through the assistance of GGBN (Global Genome Biodiversity Network). She also obtained a grant for a short course in DEST (Distributed European School of Taxonomy) Florence, Italy 2013 for Entomological Research in Protected Areas. Her research on the negative impact of insects in the environment, their taxonomy and strategies for eliminating these harmful insects has also been carried out. Studies on formulation of plant extracts and petroleum products against different developmental stages of these insects affecting agriculture (stored products and produce in the field) and medicine have also been extensively researched. Based on these studies, Dr Ojianwuna received a grant as the Principal Investigator on Entomology and Surveillance activities of the Global fund new fund model Malaria Grant for Delta State in Nigeria from 2020 till date and has established an Entomological Sentinel site in Delta State. She has also participated in the rolling coverage for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) (Onchocerciasis and Filariasis) in Isoko North L.G.A and full coverage survey on Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted Helminths in Ughelli South L.G.A of Delta State respectively in 2021. She has also been trained by ADAPTI (Advanced Digital Appreciation Programme for Tertiary Institution) on the use of SPSS in 2018. She participated in a hands-on training workshop on Capacity building in Molecular Marker Applications and Bioinformatics for Young Scientists in Biodiversity Research in Abuja ,2015. She was a beneficiary of ETF 2011 AST & D Local Training for Academic Staff and First Class Graduate Scholarship by Delta State Government . She has articles in Scopus Indexed International, National and Local journals. She is also one of the reviewers for Nigerian Journal of Science and Environment, a journal published by the Faculty of Science, Delta State University, Abraka. She is a member, Zoological Society of Nigeria, Entomological Society of Nigeria, International Society for Plant Protection and International Council of Museums. She has also handled responsibilities in the University such as; Member, TETFund Conference / workshop committee; Member, Committee for New Programme for Biotechnology, Faculty of Science, Delta State University, Abraka 2020. Member, Organizing Committee, Faculty of Science International Conference (FOSIC, 2019), Member Organizing committee of Maiden summit in Women in Leadership and Development by the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, Delta State University, Abraka 2021. She is married with beautiful children.
