  • PROFILE Joyce Ogho OGWEZI Ph.D. Joyce Ogho OGWEZI is an environmental social scientist with a focus on Development and Population Communication. She specialises in project management in the areas of gender studies, rural community development as well as implications of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on host communities in the Niger Delta Region. For over two decades, she worked in collaboration with rural communities in designing, implementing and managing frameworks for sustainable community development and the need for gender equality in African Region. She has extensive expertise, working with host communities in Nigeria and some parts of Africa. She has a very deep understanding of the development of concepts and issues aimed at building local capacity in project management using participatory models and community mobilisation techniques. In addition, she worked with international development organisations including Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited and managed many donor-funded projects and programmes having significant budgets. Joyce holds a Master of Arts Degree and a PhD. in Development Communication with special emphasis on Environmental and Sustainable Development. She co-authored two books on broadcasting and environmental development in Africa as well as co-edited and authored several chapters on communication. Some of her outstanding contributions include the development of a National Master Plan on Environmental Public Awareness for Nigeria (Federal Environmental Protection Agency, 1995), Niger Delta Environmental Studies (as the Delta State Coordinator, 1996), West African Regional Advisor/Consultant on Voices of Women Radio programmes (Focus: Women & Peace building, 2003-2006) and Regional Council Member, Conflict Mitigation and Management (CMMRC) for Delta State (in collaboration with USAID & IFESH). For over 18 years, Dr. Ogwezi worked in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, while holding various positions and serving in various capacities as a Human Rights Champion, Team Leader, Peace and Security Programme Designer, Peace Building & Conflict Resolution Training-of-Trainers (TOT) Expert, Impact Assessment (ESHIA) Coordinator, Monitoring and Evaluation (M & E) Expert, Communication and Competence Development Specialist. Dr. Joyce Ogho Ogwezi served as the Country Lead of the Socially Inclusive Cities’ Network: promoting global equality (with partners from UK, Africa and Asia), coordinated by Leeds University, UK. She is currently the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, Abraka, in which capacity she had earlier served at the pioneering stages of the institution. She returned to join other academics to develop the department in line with global best practices.
