ABOUT DELSU CDL

In Nigerian traditional system of education, the primary mode of delivery is face to face interaction between teachers and learners in a fixed location and fixed time schedules among others. Currently, DELSU runs the conventional face to face pedagogical delivery mode, and desires to complement this by adding the Distance Learning (DL) mode. As part of Delta State University core objectives, the institution desires to expand access to quality education by contributing her quota towards increasing access to higher education in order to help reduce the current national deficit in undergraduate students’ enrolment. For this reason DELSU proposed to establish a Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) with the aim of creating access for qualified candidates who desire tertiary education but could not be admitted into the conventional university system because of deficiency in capacity. The idea of DL was born in DELSU in 2019. Since then the university has been making efforts to see that DL is approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The vision of the present administration to expand access to a teeming DELTANS who seek admission yearly but could not be admitted due largely to deficiency in capacity has led to a drive with great zeal to get DL implemented in the university. This would enhance her effort towards internationalization of her programmes through cross-boundary provision of tertiary education by leveraging on modern technology. The University will strive to attain a critical balance between the guiding principles of ODL mode and the economics of scale involved in its effective and viable deployment. DELSU will ensure that the selected flagship programmes are demand driven in order to attain the desired balance. It is pertinent to mention that though the philosophy guiding the operation of ODL requires that it is affordable and cheaper than the face to face mode, the technological and manpower requirements also demand reasonable economics of scale for its viability. It is our believe that the spirit and philosophy guiding ODL establishment and implementation will be strictly adhered to following international best practices and within the regulatory framework of the Nigerian Universities Commission.

At DELSU Centre for Distance Learning, we ensure the following:

01. Lifelong, Collaborative and Blended Learning Approaches:

-Lifelong Learning- As a dual mode University, we recognize the fact that learning is not restricted by age or location. For us, learning is a lifelong process; that takes place throughout life and in a range of situations.
-Collaborative Learning – We believe that peer to peer learning or peer moderated learning could deepen learners’ knowledge, when learners work in pairs or small groups to discuss concepts, or find solutions to problems. We use technology to support peer to peer learning.
-Blended Learning Approach – Blended learning is a student-centered approach to create a learning experience whereby the learner interacts with other students, with the instructor, and with content through thoughtful integration of online and face-to-face environments.
