  • Area of Specialization: Forensic Anatomy/Pathology
  • Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology

  • Emmanuel Igho Odokuma (FMCPath, PhD, M.Sc, MBBS) My University career commenced in November 2002 when I was employed lecturer II in the Department of Anatomy, Delta State University, Abraka. As one of the first Medical Doctor’s to be employed by the Medical School and the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Biology, I and other few teaching and non-teaching staff technically started off academic activity in the department and contribute monumentally to the Faculty and College at its early stages. I taught Anatomy to the first Medical Students of this University-introducing them to the basic tenets of Medicine. During this period, students were taken through the various part of the program which included both theoretical and practical exposures in gross anatomy, histology and developmental anatomy. With enhanced interest in Anatomy, which was at the time, an unattractive medical specialty, I proceeded for a Master of Science in Anatomy and later a doctorate in Anatomy. During this period, I was further exposed to special areas in Anatomy including statistics, medical education and medical forensics. This further stimulated my interests in Postdoctoral/ Residency training in Anatomic Pathology that has strengthened my current interest, Forensic Anatomy, which involves utilization of core Gross, Developmental Anatomy and Histologic techniques in unraveling Human Forensic concerns. Since my engagement with Delta State University, I have held several administrative positions including Associate Dean, Faculty Exam officer, Coordinator of Department, Ag. Departmental Head, Ag. Director of Medical Education and Ag. Dean of Faculty, Basic Medical Sciences. I have benefited immensely from the Delta State University, especially my teachers, who have encouraged progress in my chosen career and the opportunities have also enabled supervision of several undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am currently an external examiner to several Nigerian Universities and the Postgraduate School in my current institution, has provided several opportunities to me as its representative in several postgraduate examinations involving several faculties of the University. Similarly, I have served as Consultant Anatomist to Postgraduate Medical College, Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Currently, I am the Secretary and Fellow Elect to Society of Clinical and Experimental Anatomists of Nigeria. I belong to several Associations including the prestigious Society of Clinical and Experimental Anatomists of Nigeria, SECAN; Anatomical Society of Nigeria, ASN; International Federation of Associations of Anatomy, IFAA amongst others. I have several publications spread across International, National and domestic Journals and have published some books/manuals. I am also an editor of a Journal and reviewer to several Journals. In addition to volunteer services to the Nigerian Red Cross Society of which I am a member, I provide community health services to my home town, Ovu-Inland, Delta State. Gardening Services, Landscaping, general technical repairs and reading are some of my hobbies. Some of my referees include: Patrick S. Igbigbi, (Prof of Anatomy, Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Biology, Delta State University, Abraka) Dorothea B. Grillo, (Professor of Anatomy, Department of Anatomy, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria), Chike IP Anibeze, Professor of Anatomy, (Department of Anatomy, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, Nigeria), Peter C. Aloamaka, (Professor of Physiology Department of Human Physiology, Delta State University, Abraka), Victor J Ekanem, (Professor of Morbid Anatomy, Department of Pathology, University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria), Lucky O. Odokuma, (Professor of Microbiology, Department of Microbiology, University of Port Harcourt, Port-harcourt, Rivers State)
