- Professor Akpotor participated in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from 1981 to 1982 at the Rivers School of Basic Studies, Port-Harcourt, as a classroom teacher. Employed as an Assistant Lecturer in 1986 and became a Professor on October 1, Professor Sunday Akpotor’s academic career spanned across Local Authority Primary School, Arafen, Ijebu Water Side in the present Ogun State from 1964 to 1970, where he served as Senior Prefect, Agbarho Grammar School, Agbarho from 1971 to 1976 where he served as Sanitary and Health prefect and acquired his West African School Certificate (WASC); Government College, Ughelli for his Higher School Certificate, 1976 to 1978. He proceeded to the Famous University of Ibadan, Ibadan from 1978 to 1995 where obtained his B.Sc, M.SC and Ph.D in Political Science in 1981, 1984, and 1995 respectively.
Professor Akpotor joined the services of Delta State University, Abraka on January 2, 2009 after his Sabbatical services in the Department of Political Science in same University. He has contributed immensely to the development of the discipline of political science, including the growing of a generation of competent political scientists who have occupied and still occupying key positions in government and private circles not just at home but also outside the shores of the country. He has sheer quantity and quality of publications of almost 60, including well-referenced Books (13), Co-authored books (2), Co-edited books (10) Chapters in Books (23), Journal Articles, Technical Reports and Monographs. His articles are well researched with serious technical rigour and presented with linked theoretical thrust of analysis. He evinces a mastery of Nigerian politics, particularly in the vibrant Niger Delta linkage issues; Foreign Policy, International Relations, Strategic Studies and Political Economy.
Professor Akpotor ably synthesizes and re-interprets a wealth of information in many readable pages; shows originality and creativity in the application of concepts and generally adds to the understanding of issues under discussion. He has a history of continuing commitment to academic work, including teaching, research and publication. Has a standing in the political science discipline globally, having by the grace of God and dint of effort succeeded in emerging as a nationally renowned, internationally recognized, and top-rate scholar by his colleagues and students, and researcher, as well as prolific writer. He has supervised and graduated 9 Ph.D’s and various Masters (M.Sc. and MPA) degree holders who are in both teaching and non-teaching positions in various Universities and Establishments.
Professor Akpotor has garnered critical administrative experience for a record of 16 years in the University, and understands human relations. He was once an Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Ambrose Alli University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for four years. He served as Acting Head of department for three consecutive years from 2001 to 2004. He was Director, Centre for Strategic and Development Studies, AAU, Ekpoma, 2007-2008; Director, Centre for Environmental and Niger Delta Studies, DELSU, 2009 - 2012; Acting Dean, Faculty of the Social Sciences, DELSU, October 8 to November 13, 2009. He is an External examiner/Assessor to various Universities in Nigeria where he has certified some Associate Professors and Professors. His flair for academics is also shown in his zeal in conference organization which as of today runs to 6. He has served as chairman and member of various University and ASUU Committees.
Professor Akpotor has at various times been engaged by the Government in both Academic and community services.
