- PROFESSOR GRACE NGOZI ATUH: SYNERGIZING SCHOLARSHIP AND SERVICE TO HUMANITY
Professor (Mrs) Grace Ngozi Atuh, an Ukwuani woman from Delta State, Nigeria and incumbent Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Delta State University, Abraka, was born in 1960, the year of Nigeria’s independence. She attended, Tinu Primary School, Suru-Lere, Lagos (1969-1974), Reagan Memorial Girls Baptist High School, Yaba, Lagos (1974-1976) and later Obiaruku Grammar School, Obiaruku, Delta State (1976-1979) where she obtained the West African School Certificate.
She commenced tertiary education at the then College of Education, Abraka (1979-1983) and earned the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Fine and Applied Arts with Distinction. Her academic and creative interest lured her to the University of Benin between 1983 & 1986 where she studied for a Bachelor of Education degree in Fine and Applied Arts and graduated with a First Class Honours Degree. She also possesses a Certificate of Registration as a “Certified Teacher” with the TEACHERS REGISTRATION COUNCIL OF NIGERIA.
Professor Atuh’s academic exploit is woven around three Master’s degrees, namely M.Ed (Educational Administration) - 1990 from the University of Benin, Benin-City, Edo State, Nigeria. She posseses Master of Fine Arts - MFA (Ceramics)-1991, MA (Art Education) - 2003 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree in Art Education in 2007 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. She has been a lecturer in the Ivory Tower since 1988 when she signed up as a Graduate Assistant with the old Bendel State University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria.
Through focus and diligence which are reflected in numerous national and foreign academic publications, innumerable national and international Art Exhibitions, conferences and workshops, and enterprising scholarship, she earned the ultimate icing on the academic cake when she was proclaimed a PROFESSOR of Ceramics and Art Education in October 2010.
She has also attended and held or participated in several Art Exhibitions, Conferences and Training Workshops within and outside Nigeria. Some of the Art Exhibitions, Conferences and training workshops attended outside Nigeria held at Johannesburg, South Africa, Dubai,Mali, Togo, Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, United States of America, Mauritius to mention but a few.
A remarkable feature of Professor Atuh’s enviable academic run is her commitment to service both within the citadel of learning and outside of it. She has held many significant appointments within the University just as she has also been very active in the larger space of community service. Within the University she has been Hall Warden and Hall Mistress at various times for University Students Halls of Residence, Head of Department at various times, Director of Special Duties and University Wide Time-Table & Space allocation, Chairman / Member of several Committees, including University Ceremonials, Teaching & Examination Monitoring Committees as well as various Investigative Committees. She served as the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Delta State University Abraka between 2015 and 2019 when she became the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Delta State University, Abraka, a position she still occupy till date.
In addition to academic related responsibilities within the Delta State University, she also served as a Member, Delta State Government Team for setting up and monitoring the effective commencement of four (4) tertiary institutions within Delta State namely:
Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi Uku.
Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro.
Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara.
College of Physical & Health Education, Mosogar.
Professor Atuh has served and still serves as external examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes to universities within and outside Nigeria as well as serves as External Assessor for academic staff to other universities within and outside Nigeria for promotion to the rank Associate Professors and Professors. Some examples include The Margaret Trowel Department of Fine and Industrial Arts, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda – 2013-2018, Federal University of Technology , Akure, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State. Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology, Ogbomoso et cetera.
She has served as member of Accreditation & Resource Verification team for National Universities Commission (NUC). She equally served as President, Ceramics Researchers’ Association of Nigeria (with Secretariat at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria- October, 2015 – November, 2019.
Beyond the walls of the University, Professor Atuh is a symbol of the link between TOWN and GOWN as she has deployed her immense academic talent in the socio-economic empowerment of Nigerians especially the womenfolk. Her involvement in Participatory Rural Appraisal & Participatory Learning and Action (PRA/PLA) for Niger Delta Environmental Survey (NDES) organized by IRED Anglophone West Africa PLC, and the setting up of Ceramic/Pottery industries organized through collaboration of SPDC, NNPC, CHEVRON, TEXACO, AGIP & MOBIL have contributed to the socio-economic emancipation of women and youth.
She has also functioned in other Delta State Government Committees, including membership of the on-going Delta State Government Committee on Covid-19 (Ukwuani Local Government Chapter) for sourcing and distribution of palliative food items and cash (including food items supplied from the Delta State Government food Bank).
This intellectual and creative Amazon is a recipient of scholarships, honours and awards, one of which is the 1986 International Youth Year Award. A professional member of the Society of Nigerian Artists with an award of Psna and also a Fellow of the Social of Nigerian Artists (fsna). She is equally a member and trained Mediators By Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) Nigeria. Asaba.
