  • Prof. Omo-Aghoja graduated with MBBS from the famous Medical School of the University of Benin in 1994. He holds the fellowships of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), National Postgraduate Medical College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FMCOG), and the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He also holds a certificate in good clinical practice from the prestigious London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and therefore amongst the internationally certified/certificated Nigerians to conduct randomized clinical and experimental trials. He is a Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and occupies a permanent Chair, of Infertility & Reproductive Endocrinology. In addition, he functions as a Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist to the world class Delta State University Teaching Hospital where he had earlier served as the pioneer Chairman Medical Advisory Committee and Director of Clinical Services and Training. He is the immediate past Director, Residency and Postgraduate Training of the teaching hospital. He is very well spoken, a teacher and a mentor per excellence. Prof. Omo-Aghoja is a foremost and active member of the Faculty of Obstetrics & Gynecology of the West African College of Surgeons. A long-standing Invigilator, Coordinator and, Senior Examiner at the post graduate examinations of the College, and an Assessor to the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He also serves as external examiner at the postgraduate exit examinations of the Liberian College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is an external examiner at the undergraduate examinations of several medical schools in Nigeria. He is the founding Editor of the African Journal of Tropical Medicine and Biomedical Research, the official publication of the College of Health Sciences Delta State University. He is also the Editor-in-Chief, of the Journal of Reproduction & Sexual Health, which is the official publication of the Delta Health Reproductive Health Initiative and Research Centre. On behalf of 35 international scholars, Prof. Omo-Aghoja edited the internationally reputed, multi-authored textbook titled: “Infertility and Assisted Conception in the Tropics”. Recently, he also edited another world class textbook – "The Fundamentals of Clinical Reproductive Endocrinology”. These two books complete the first set of major subspecialty textbooks in the West African sub-region. He is widely researched and published and continues to be an avid researcher with several scholarly publications to his credit in peer-reviewed journals. He has also contributed chapters to several textbook in Nigeria, across Africa and beyond. He is a SCIENTIFIC/RESEARCH AWARDEE with several awards to his credit amongst which are, (i) Society of Gynecology & Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON’s) Majekodunmi’s Young Investigators Award (2003), (ii) Macarthur’s Fund for Leadership Development Grant (2004), and (iii) ETHICON PRIZE AWARD of the West African College of Surgeons (being the highest scientific/research award of the College). Prof. Omo-Aghoja has been very resourceful in the development of the College of Health Sciences and by extension the University, having served in several administrative capacities – past Head of Department in the formative years of the College, Director of Medical Education, Dean of Faculty and now the incumbent Provost of the College and member of the University Management team amongst others. Prof. Omo-Aghoja is a leading Programmer in maternal and child health issues, having been involved in the implementation of several programmes and projects geared towards contributing to optimizing maternal and child health challenges not only in Nigeria but globally. He previously served as Project Manager Saving Mothers & New-born’s Health Project of the International Federation of Obstetrics & Gynecology (FIGO), United Kingdom, and in this capacity, he supervised the collation of scientific data on maternal and new-born’s issues as well as monitoring and evaluating these data in 12 middle and low income countries from Africa and Latin America. Between 2003 and 2008, he was the Central Project Coordinator of the Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Nigeria’s (SOGON) Safe motherhood project. Also worked as a Consultant to the Federal Ministry of Health, PATH2, Population Services International, ABS Associate based in the United states amongst others on several maternal and child health engagements. He is the Executive Director of The Delta Reproductive Health Initiative and Research Centre (DERHIREC), based in Sapele Delta State, Nigeria. From 2000 till date, he has been a Senior Associate of the Women’s Health and Action Research Center (WHARC), Benin City (a leading NGO on sexual & reproductive health in Africa). He has served and continues to serve as Principal Investigator to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the United Kingdom, as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) on a number of global and national epoch making health surveys and interventional studies such as the WOMAN Trial that established with clear evidence the benefits of tranexamic acid in the management of postpartum hemorrhage; and the Nigeria Near-miss and Maternal Death Survey amongst others.
